Magic Answers

From Margaret L. Byrne:

"I bought about five packs of changeable felt pen markers. Using the magic pen, I made a stencil key using an X-acto knife and then dabbed the magic tip on the correct answer. I give the students the color changing pens to take the test. If they get the correct answer, the color of the pen changes immediately. This gives them immediate feedback and helps them to really read all their choices before selecting the best answer. After doing several multiple-choice practice tests this way, I have the students make up their own tests about the novels we are reading. They use the magic hidden marker to mark the correct answers and exchange tests with their reading partners. This saves me time, gives immediate feedback and helps them understand how question choices are designed. I teach them that there is one correct answer, one trick answer that is close to the real answer, one that is usually the exact opposite and one that is really wrong or is a throw away answer. Students get better at using elimination to answer questions."
